Upper Mustang Trekking

  • Upper Mustang trek takes you to the capital  town of the medieval kingdom of Mustang in the Trans Himalayan region of the central northern part of Nepal. Mustang  is bordered with Tibet. Upper mustang trekking region was opened for foreign trekkers in 1992 and limited number of tourist visit this region in a year and requires the special permit from the government of Nepal. Trekking in Mustang offers the pristine beauty of nature and culture. Mustang region is more close to Tibet in terms of cultural practices and the geographical structure than rest of the Nepal. Upper mustang trek also offers the views of the mountains like Annapurna (8091m), Dhaulagiri (8167m.), Machhapuchhre (6996m.), Nilgiri, Tukuche, Himalchuli etc. During the upper mustang trek, trekkers get chance to explore the culture and lifestyle of the ethnic people like Thakali & Thakuris. Lo Mangthang, the capital of the upper mustang, is the walled city of just 106 houses which is inhabited by the Tibetan Buddhist people. In Lo Mangthang you can see many Buddhist monasteries.
    Upper Mustang trek which is also known as the Lo Mangthang Trek begins with the  20 minutes scenic flight from Pokhara to Jomsom. Then you head to the gate way of Upper mustang Kagbeni village which is situated on the bank of the Kali Gandaki River. You follow the bank of the Kali Gandaki River there. Kagbeni is famous for Saligram, a stone on which the image of Hindu Lord Vishnu is carved. There you see the Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims flocked to Muktinath, the sacred place of Hindu and Buddhist. The deepest gorge of the world made by Kali Gandaki River between Dhaulagiri and Annapurna is another remarkable attraction of this trek.  You visit many centuries old Tibetan monasteries like Tiger Monastery, Namgyal monastery, Choser Monastery in Lo Mangthang. While trekking you traverse the desert land of the Trans Himalayan region, rugged mountains, villages etc. you can combine this trek to the Muktinath temple. The best season to go for upper mustang trek are autumn and spring when the weather is clear and you can have the clear view of the mountains.


  • Day 01: Arrival at Kathmandu (1310m/4264ft.)
    You are welcome in Himalayan kingdom Nepal. After you arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), the representative of Adventure Speed  greets of welcome and takes you to the hotel which you have already informed. The hotel staffs will be engaged for your accommodation and check in. In the evening, there will be an arrangement of welcome dinner in the hotel.

    Day 02:
    Kathmandu sightseeing and preparation for trekking
    Today, after having breakfast, we will provide a guide who will take you to the famous cultural and historical sites of Kathmandu. Among them, the UNESCO enlisted world heritage may be the primary place of visit. Pashupatinath (sacred Hindu temple), Boudhanath (Buddhist Shrine), Swayambhunath (Monkey temple), Durbar Squire, Hanuman Dhoka Durbar, Dharahara ( Bhimsen Tower) etc. After having lunch at 2/3 o’clock in the afternoon, you should involve pre- trip discussion with your trekking- guide for well preparation of the trek. You can experience night life of Kathmandu too.

    Day 03:
    Kathmandu to Pokhara drive by Bus (910m.)
    After breakfast, we leave Kathmandu and drive to Pokhara through Prithivi Highway. On the way, we enjoy the overwhelming view of rocky hills while going along the river. The road is smooth but traffic jam may disturb. We stop in Kurintar for a cup of tea from where we view the Cable-car’s sliding up and down to Manakamana. If time remains, you will visit important places of Pokhara city. Fewa Lake, Mahendra Cave, Davis Falls, Gorge of Seti River under Mahendrapul and many other places are there to visit in Pokhara. Night in a hotel comfortably.

    Day 04: Flight to Jomsom and Trekking to Kagbeni (2858m.), about 4 hours
     After breakfast in Pokhara, you will be transferred to the airport for a short scenic flight of 20 minutes over the mountains. You can explore the historical and trade value of Jomsom as the headquarter of Mustang District as well as Mustang region. It is also the old route of Trans Himalayan Salt Trade to Tibet. We follow the trail along the Kali Gandaki River bed for 3 hour still we reach at Ekley Bhatti village. We can reach Kagbeni after a short walk of an hour from Ekley Bhatti so you may have a rest for a while and explore the locality. Kagbeni is the place where Kak Khola and Mustang Khola meet together from there it is called Kali Gandaki River which is the sacred river for Hindus. Kali Gandaki is important for the stones calleds Saligrama which are not found in other rivers.

    Day 05:
      Kagbeni to Chele Trek (3050m.), 5-6 hours
    With having breakfast we get checked our permits and follow the upstream of Kali Gandaki riverbank. There are a lot of spots to stop and view with wide open eyes while you are crossing the way through up and downhill. We reach Tangbe village crossing the sandy and windy trail. The houses are white and fields are cultivated with barley wheat, buckwheat and apple orchids. We continue to Chhusang and cross the river then walk up to the huge red chunk of conglomerate that has fallen from the cliff above which has formed a tunnel through which Kali Gandaki follows. The way further heads on to a small ridge at Chele village. We spend a night in Chele in a tent.

    Day 06:
    Chele to Syanbochen Trek (3475m.) 6-7 hours
    The trekking trail leads to Syanbochen through Eklo Bhatti. Our climbing to Taklam-La Pass at the altitude of 3624m. Continues through narrow stretches and plateaus with the vies of Tilicho Himal, Yakawa Kang and Damodar Himal. We descend down to the Samar villageand again climb above Samar to the ridge. The trail descends steep to a stream. We walk along the forest of juniper trees and pass by a cave known as Ramchung Cave. We reach to Syanbochen relaxing the weather and landscape and set camp for overnight stay.

    Day 07:  Syanbochen to Ghaymi (3520m.), 6 hours
    On this day we climb uphill to the Yamda La at the height of 3850 meters passing by a few teashops, chörtens and local people acquiring Tibetan style of houses. Our route crosses the mountain passes and an avenue of Poplar trees and field. We climb the Nyi Pass and descend to Ghaymi. It is the third largest village in Lo region which is surrounded by  mostly barren fields. We stop there overnight.

    Day 08:
    Ghaymi to Charang Trek (3500m.)
    Our early walk will be pleasant after breakfast till we cross Ghaymi Khola. The trail ascends to a plateau and passes beside a very long Mani wall. After the end of this sacred Buddhist stone wall we walk to the east to reach Charang village. We walk through field willow trees and houses separated by stone walls. We reach at the top of Tsarang Chu canyon. We stop there for overnight stay.

    Day 09:
    Charang to Lo-Mangthang Trek (3700m), 6 hours
    After breakfast, we begin one of the best trekking day with a magnificent view of Nilgiri, Tilicho, Annapurna I and Bhrikuti Peak. The trail descends to Charang Chu canyon and then climbs steeply after crossing the river and the trail continues ascends gently to the Pass of Lo. You can view Lo-Mangthang Valley. Then, we descend to Lo-Mangthang with viewing the walled city. It is the place we stay overnight.

    Day 10:
      Rest at Lo-Mangthang
    It is our rest day in Lo- Mangthang. You can explore the surrounding area of Lo- Mangthang. Namgyal Gompa and Tingkhar and Tall Champa Lakhang, Thugchen Gompa, Chyodi Gompa and the Entrance Hall are the point of exploration there. Four- storey building of Raja’s palace is another attractive spot. The panoramic view of white Himalayas is the ever following exploration. Stay in Lo-Mangthang in a hotel.

    Day 11:
      Trek to Drakmar (3810m.) 6-7 hours
    Our trek begins after breakfast to Drakmar through Gyakar. The old Ghar Gompa is 1200 years old which is bless with Guru Rimpoche. The Gompa is also famous for its beautiful rock paintings. It is supposed to be fulfilled a wish if anyone wishes in it. The weather is windy in the afternoon. Explore the surrounding with enjoying the nature’s grandeur. Overnight stay in Drakmar.

    Day 12:
      Drakmar to Ghiling trek (3806m.), 6 hours
    We walk to Ghiling after having breakfast early in the morning. It is along walk of about 5-6 hours enjoying the natural wonder of landscape. We reach Ghilling and have our lunch there. After that, you have time to explore the surrounding in the evening because the afternoon is dusty wind. Overnight stay in Ghiling.

    Day 13:
      Trek to Chhuksang (3050m.),  5/6 hrs.
    It is the day to trek to explore Chhuksang and enjoy the great views of Himalayas. You will be overwhelmed by the astonishing panoramic sceneries of the landscape. No one can stop you to swallow the beauty and majestic pose of the nature’s creation while you are trekking. We stay in Chhuksang for the night.

    Day 14:
      Chhuksang to Jomsom Trek (2700m.), 7 hours
    On this day we walk to Jomsom through kagbeni. It is a longer trek retrieving back to the Upper Mustang. We take lunch in Kagbeni and head to Jomsom. The trail is followed with enjoying the scenarios along the way. We stay overnight in Jomsom and optionally can visit Muktinath if you have one more day.

    Day 15:
    Fly back to Pokhara and Exploring the city, 30 minutes
    After breakfast, we check in the airport to fly back to Pokhara. The flight is short but adventurous as it goes through the two huge mountains- Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. As you arrive in Pokhara, you will be transferred to hotel and have refreshments. You have plenty of time to explore Pokhara city with our guide. Overnight stay in a hotel luxurisously.

    Day 16:
    Drive back to Kathmandu, 200km. (6hrs.)
    After breakfast, we charter a vehicle to Kathmandu to travel about 200km. long roadway. If you are on the left side, you can enjoy the natural sceneries. You may have Lunch in kurintar and hold for some time. You will be received by the representative and transferred to hotel. There will be celebration dinner with the team in the evening. Remaining time is for purchasing gifts to your near ones. Spend evening leisurely wandering till 9 o’clock. Overnight at Kathmandu.

    Day 17:
    Farewell Day
    On the last day, we bid goodbye to the guest as visit in Nepal comes to the end for this time. If you have time enough, you can have sightseeing and purchasing the token of love from Nepal. Before 3 hours of scheduled flight, a representative of Adventure Speed will take you to the TIA. On your way home, you will have plenty of time to plan your next adventurous visit with recollection of experiences.
